Julika Lackner

February 2024

New Essay by Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe about my landscapes:

Some states have official artists, usually sculptors, who commemorate in stone or bronze individuals or events deemed worth memorializing.  California doesn’t have such an institution, but if it did have one and it took form of landscape painting, I think Julika Lackner should be the one.  Lackner’s paintings work differently than most paintings of the California landscape.  Where landscape paintings of California (or anywhere else for that matter) are usually paintings of the colors that the artist sees, many of the colors in her paintings are implied by what she sees rather than direct representations of it.  A large part of a Lackner painting is of stripes which are a kind of generalized pointillism. The colors in the stripes have been divided into two, reduced to colors which are sometimes the same, other times gradiations throughout the stripe, so that one looks at them as it were analytically.  One could be forgiven for wondering whether the striations represent two different times, but they don’t, they are instead Lackner’s readings of the two conditions into which what you’re looking at can be divided, or which it could be said to combine.

When it does come down to painting with the colors that one does see, she’s also good at that.  When she was a student, for example, she would come to my studio to get the colors of the night right, by painting them in the colors that one sees rather than with the colors that photographs suggested, as is generally the case with landscapists.  The night sky is mostly made of ultramarine blue and van Dyke brown, with some other colors that come with the specifics of the context.  We would look at the sky and figure out the colors and then keep holding up the little canvas on which we were working until it blended with the sky to the point where it disappeared within it, and then that would be the color she could work with when making her paintings during the day and with lots of light.

The landscape, as a combination of synthetic abstractions of colors in the stripes and sensitively realized perceptions of color elsewhere, is in Lackner’s paintings at once both recognizable and unfamiliar.  I think this is what makes her paintings so popular.  In keeping with contemporary taste they give one something to think about as one looks at a landscape which one knows perhaps not quite as well as one thought one did.  While most popular contemporary art deals with social issues, as it always has, Lackner’s popularity with the general public, as well as with those portions of the élite that likes and supports her work, follows from its giving one something one doesn’t get in other paintings of what are in a sense its type.  An experience made of, and about and for, California experience.

Read the review of the show in the Santa Barbara News Press by Joseph Woodard here. About my piece Woodard writes : “...A similar play of soft against hard is at work, in a very different way, in Julika Lackner’s “Yellowstone Early Morning,” with elements reduced to minimalist essentials. Clouds hover above, misty washes below, and sharp-edged, f;at-planed silhouetted mountains stake out the lake middle ground of the composition. Voila, a landscape painting which pays homageto its subject, but follows the discerning artistic scheme of the artist, in equal measure.“

Hayward has carefully curated a wide variety of artists, primarily from the west coast, ranging from emerging young artists to mid career internationally recognized artists.

I have tried not to focus on any one aspect of image making,” says Hayward of his show curation.

"We have just added a new series of art in print by TWFineArt’s Julika Lackner. This series is a gorgeous abstract representation of the American landscape in locations like Yellowstone National Park. Like the impressionists, Lackner captures moments of light and color. What she sees around her is depicted in layers of horizontal bands that reference the horizons of landscape. Like layers of sediment, the bands pile on top of each other to create complex abstract visions of the environments around her."
